Actually, it's probably easiest to invoke your bar from within xmonad,  
whether it's xmobar or dzen. xmonad knows how much gap to leave  
becaues xmobar and dzen set strut hints, and the  
manageDocks/avoidStruts manage hook and layout modifier, respectively,  
know what to do with those.
