Reopening.  I still can't reproduce this, but we've had two separate 
people that can.
 Please humor me and run this exact sequence of steps:

cd your_xmonad_dir
darcs pull -a
runghc Setup clean
runghc Setup configure # maybe --user and --prefix flags here if you 
usually do that
runghc Setup build
runghc Setup install

cd your_contrib_dir
darcs pull -a
runghc Setup clean
runghc Setup configure
runghc Setup build
runghc Setup install

xmonad --recompile # watch the output here, looking for any compile errors

Finally, press mod-q to restart, then mod-shift-space on each workspace 
to release
any old layout state.
