upcoming changes to ticky profiling

FYI, I pushed this patch earlier today. I hope you find it useful!

Again, please let me know if it has disrupted your workflow; I'll
feverishly fix it up.

Further, I've consolidated the ticky-ticky documentation (both old and new)
