Mod+Shift+Backspace is my custom binding that starts a shell script:

((modm .|. shiftMask, xK_BackSpace), spawn "~/.xmonad/scripts/shutdown.sh")

This is a good hint, you've given me here. So how to diagnose it further  
from here on?
