Some notes from IRC: this seems to occur even on a stock configuration  
(main = xmonad defaultConfig). He's using Ubuntu, and has updated to the  
most recent graphics drivers. There's no compositing manager running, and  
xdpyinfo shows that the X server is not using save-under.
