I got this behaviour too: switching from a workspace containing Firefox  
causes a CPU spike (Firefox consuming 101% CPU on a dual core); one can  
newer switch back to Firefox (workspace appears empty).

Config : Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS.

It happened on XMonad 0.8, and updating to XMonad 0.9 did not improve  
things. The bug appeared last week, when things had been working perfectly  
for months. I believe it was triggered by an aptitude full-upgrade (GTK  
update ?).
