I haven't had this happen for a while now, so I think it had to do with  
configuration
files. I'm attaching my xmonad.hs, .xsession, and xmobar.config so we can  
compare.
I'm now using xscreensaver with locking and power saving, and Firefox 3.0.4  
with no
problems.
