If you set the environment variable AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit (for example, 
put the line

export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

in your .xsession or wherever you start xmonad from), does it still 
crash?  This has
worked for me and might be a viable workaround until the real bug is addressed.
