I think this kind of question is exactly what SimonPJ is worried about
when he says:

I also agree that this is a topic of the greatest importance for the
community. See my previous comments about building Debian packages.
To organize our thoughts and comments, I've added a page to the wiki
(which you can contribute to and alter by clicking "Edit page" at the

I'm starting to think that it needs to be broken up into more pages,
but we'll see what you do with it. I already added some comments from
this thread to get us going.
