[jhc] apparent jhc bug.

perhaps not so useful, but I've been getting that 'user error' message  
for code that typechecks too.
I've been doing a heap of things with unsafePerformIO and  
unsafeCoerce, though, so I'm not totally surprised it falls over  
occasionally.
