 I wonder if the version of `ld.gold` has something to do with this? On
 Ubuntu 14.04, I have:

 GNU gold (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu 2.24) 1.11

 the GNU General Public License version 3 or (at your option) a later

 But on Ubuntu 16.04 and later, I have:
