Stackage is a curated subset of Hackage. (Sadly, the main criterion for
curation is "works with Yesod", so you get to take your chances if you're
not using Yesod.) It's more an alternative to the Haskell Platform, since
Yesod always wants newer stuff.
(De facto the Haskell Platform is irrelevant, since everyone is rushing
pell-mell to tie themselves to Yesod via Stackage. We're Ruby now! When the
ecosystem is defined by a web platform, the ecosystem *becomes* the web
platform. This might even work for you; for me, it's a cliff rushing ever
closer.)
