 Alternatively, would the following procedure work?

 - Build the unmodified source in the usual way, all stages.
 - Run the testsuite to give a basis for comparison.
 - Set stage=2 in build.mk.
 - Reconfigure: ./configure --disable-unregisterised
 - make
 - Run the testsuite again.
