The vmtoolsd process (and another one running under root but I think that  
should be started at boot) is all that shows in "ps", but my MATE session  
shows that what is actually run to start it is  
/usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper. This may well do additional  
configuration (e.g. a one-time communication with the VM host) to set up  
things like copy-paste.
