* run xfce4-session-settings and save the current session

That should do the trick.
One could also use .xinitrc with these lines:

xmonad &
exec xfce4-session

and remove xfwm4 from the session beforehand.

For power management, I found that xfce4-power-manager (which is still
a stand-alone program) works just as well as gnome-power-manager.
