Using XMonad.Hooks.EwmhDesktops fixes this issue for me (setup according to  
http://xmonad.org/xmonad-docs/xmonad-contrib/XMonad-Hooks-EwmhDesktops.html).  
I'm running xmonad 0.9.2 and libreoffice 3.4.3.
