Probably your suspicion is correct since I launch startx backgrounded from  
the
console and then logout.  So output to the virtual console may no longer be  
possible.

I attached what I got from putting "exec strace -o xmonad.strace xmonad" in  
my
~/.xinitrc.  I hope this is more like what you are looking for.
