I can reproduce this. It seems to happen that when a floating window at the  
top of
the stack is closed, with sublayouts the focus goes up to the last window,  
while
without the modifier it goes to the master window.

I'm looking into why subLayouts is synchoronizing it's state with xmonad's
incorrectly in this case.
