This isn't really new, we've discussed xmonad registering itself as the window
manager before. See comment #1 on issue 99 for an explanation of a 
--replace flag to
xmonad. I think it was decided that adding a replace flag wasn't very necessary.
It may be possible to do this in a contrib (and have xmonad always 
replace the
current wm if that contrib is loaded)
