I suspect this phenomenon has to do with the debian/ubuntu 
libghc-x11-dev packages. I
have the same problem with xmonad 0.6-3 on debian sid, although my 
installations from
tarball of 0.2/0.3/0.4.1 work flawlessly in this regard. lsof shows 
that libxinerama
is not loaded at all by xmonad which suggests again a configuration 
problem. I'll try
to investigate some more soon.
