I bet you're observing a urxvt or mc race condition.  Spawning another /bin/sh
process delays the start of mc by a split second allowing mc to pick up 
the correct
terminal geometry.  Not an xmonad bug, I'm afraid.  As a workaround, 
try executing
'sleep 0.5s; mc' in urxvt.
