that's definitely a nice effect, could be a feature too!

anyway, if you find it annoying , there's a patch, attached, that will make
LayoutHints a decoration aware layout modifier.

since I don't correctly understand, yet, how much of my proposed 
changes will be
kept, I'm not pushing this patch. who's going to fix tabbed, can do both.
