My apologies, I was a bit too quick to the conclusion that your
definition of "Just checked out" was the problem.

BTW, darcs does have a concept of unique revision identifiers - see
"darcs changes --context".  However, the identifiers are *much* less
compact than the version ID's used by subversion et al.

As for your mailing list question, it is common practice (I do it) to
 Cc: all the other participants of the thread; the Haskell.org mailing list
software does not by default send you messages if you are CC'd, to avoid
duplicates.  Perhaps your email client is configured to drop the direct
message in the CC case - this would prevent any messages from arriving!
