Are you using X11 1.4.1?  There are bugs in older versions that 
avoidStruts triggers.
  Please upgrade and let us know whether this problem persists.  
Remember that you
must clean and reinstall xmonad and xmonad-contrib, and also remove ~/.xmonad/xmonad.
