Thanks, Malcolm. I fell into the old trap, using gcc 3.3.3. Switching to 
gcc 2.95.3 solved the problem.
I didn't see any warning about this on the webpages, maybe even 
configure should reject this gcc?

By the way, I use Solaris 5.9 and build with ghc-6.2.
