A suggestion for the alpha/ia64/hppa build failure: in
src/unix/configure.in, after the line
HUGS_TRY_DYNLINK("-shared")
add a new line
HUGS_TRY_DYNLINK("-shared -fPIC")
assuming this is the same problem as
