actually, what i did in the end is this (installing everything for my
user locally):

runghc ./Setup.hs configure --user --prefix=/tmp2/
runghc ./Setup.hs build
...

(I first did the 'cabal install crypto', but for ghc-6.10.4 that
didn't work.  will start debugging now.)
