I wouldn't say it was an exact synonym. Though the
dictionary definitions are similar, sloth has a more
negative connotation than laziness; the fourth deadly sin is
called "sloth" rather than "laziness".

I think using it as a mascot is a bad idea: "Haskell is so
slow, they even chose a sloth as the mascot".
