tryJust (guard . isEOFError) $ recv ...
with base-4 or
tryJust (ioErrors >=> guard . isEOFError) $ recv ...
with base-3, right?

Also, Prelude.getChar/System.IO.hGetChar should have return type
IO (Maybe Char)
in the interest of totality.
