Maybe, with System.IO,
main =
do log <- openFile "/tmp/log.txt" AppendMode
hSetBuffering log LineBuffering
hPutStrLn log "About to do something..."
x <- return $! product [1 .. 65536]
hPutStrLn log "did something."
hPutStrLn log ("x is " ++ show x)
hClose log
