New codegen failing test-cases

I did a bit more merging of your branch.  My current state is here:

http://darcs.haskell.org/ghc-cmm-15Sep10/

it doesn't actually build, but the failure is somewhere in hoopl I 
think.  This branch is 400-odd patches behind the current HEAD.  I don't 
think I borked anything too badly during the merge, so it should be safe 
to start from here.
