The solution was to change
where elemFromList  = listToMaybe $ drop 1 $(dropWhile (/= view) $ (xs++[x]))
into :
where elemFromList  = listToMaybe $ drop 1 $ (dropWhile (/= view) $ (xs++[x]))
                                            ^

Really missleading error message ;)
