 Unable to reproduce bug on Mac OS 10.8.1 (Mountain Lion) with latest 32
 bit Haskell platform. I first did  cabal install syntax-trees and was then
 able to compile and load the file (original bug) and evaluate ex1 which
 gave the expected value of "42"
