 Apparently

 {{{
 canonicalizePath ""
 }}}

 returns random noise on both Windows and Linux (GHC 6.10.4).

 Example session:
 {{{
 System.Directory> canonicalizePath ""
 "\242\227\&6\STX\NAK"
 }}}

 On OSX / GHC 6.10.1 it works correctly (returning the current directory).
 Linux / GHC 6.8.2 also returns noise.
