Comment (by kahl at cas.mcmaster.ca):

 The attachment TIATest.lhs also shows exponential compile time increase in
 6.8 for nexted type synonyms, and adding
 PartiallyAppliedClosedTypeSynonyms to the LANGUAGE pragma (currently in)
 appears to solve the problem.
