Comment:

 The patch isn't completely correct; it should be using modifyMVar, which
 uses block/unblock internally (there's a still a race between takeMVar and
 catchException otherwise).  However, modifyMVar isn't available yet, so
 we'd have to define a local copy of it.

 Instead it might be better to use atomicModifyIORef.

 Anyway, I'll look at this.
