Comment:

 Here's a fix and a regression test for STABLE.  I'm working on a project
 that depends on this, so I'd appreciate if it made it into 6.8.2 so that I
 don't have to use a forked GHC.

 By the way, looks like this bug has been around since at least GHC 0.29.
