 Supported by Jason Dagit, David Roundy, Don Stewart and Malcolm Wallace.
 No dissent.

 It was noted that it would be even better if the functions prevented use
 of the Handle outside their scope.  Oleg has shown
 [http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell/2006-January/thread.html#17410
 how to do this] but it requires a different monad.
