Initial Comment:
We finally tracked down a long-lasting problem 
preventing us from using ghc-5-04.* (we still use ghc-
5.02.3): the implementation of lexLitChar is broken.

A correct implementation (e.g., ghc-5.02.3 or hugs) 
should behave as follows

Char> lexLitChar "BUG"

This is fixed in the HEAD compiler.  I'm not sure if it's 
important enough to merge over to 5.04.4 (which we may 
never release, because 6.0 may come first), but it'd certainly 
be possible.

Sorry about this bug... there's a test for it now.
