Mangler problem building libraries/ with gcc 3.0.4

The status on this is:

we don't have gcc 3.0.4, and probably won't fix this mangler
bug till out local system staff upgrade to it.  Meanwhile, the
easiest thing for you to do is to use an older gcc, as Marcin shows
below.
