GHC 4.08 vs Cygwin 1.1.7 ??

I am noticing some oddness with GHC 4.08.1 since I switched to Cygwin 1.1.7.
I'm getting lots of "^M"s in .hi and .depend files. In fact, the .depend
file grows one ^M per line per run. If I manually inject some nonsense into
the .depend file, I can see that it's preserved by the next run, so
mkdependHS seems to be adding ^M and nothing else.
Here is the command.
c:/ghc/ghc-4.08.1/lib/mkdependHS -i//c/pan/src -syslib lang -syslib text
-syslib util -i//c/hdirect-0.17/lib -f .depend Introduction.lhs
Functions.lhs CheckerHalf.lhs Checker.lhs PolarChecker.lhs
ComposingFunctions.lhs Colors.lhs Bitmaps.lhs SpaceWarp.lhs Swirl.lhs
ExoticWarps.lhs MoreRegions.lhs Animation.lhs Compile_Introduction.hs
Compile_Functions.hs Compile_CheckerHalf.hs Compile_Checker.hs
Compile_PolarChecker.hs Compile_ComposingFunctions.hs Compile_Colors.hs
Compile_Bitmaps.hs Compile_SpaceWarp.hs Compile_Swirl.hs
Compile_ExoticWarps.hs Compile_MoreRegions.hs Compile_Animation.hs
MyPan.hs CompileEffects.hs CompileAll.hs
I know that it's better form to use "ghc -M", but (I think) I was unable to
convince it to get along with both Windows/Dos-style and Cygwin-style drive
specifiers (c: vs //c).
Any ideas? For now, I'm manually fixing the .depend and .hi files. Thanks,
