 in the middle of validating / checking a possibly slightly different patch
 that works

 Kavon on IRC asked if the issues between platforms and clang vs gcc etc
 could be resolved by moving the inline assembly into its own file. I think
 that might work  and remove dependency on platform specific CPP about ASM
 encodings
