 I will take a crack at (2).

 Note to myself: we should try to emulate the behavior of the first case of
 [http://git.haskell.org/ghc.git/blob/fb78b0d22635b1d7ae68385c648b8c407f5562c2:/libraries
 /template-haskell/Language/Haskell/TH/Ppr.hs#l734 pprFunArgType] in the
 `ArrowT` case of `Convert.cvtTypeKind`.
