 The previous string of comments are very very helpful. I have a good
 understanding of the issues here. I also don't have any strong opinions
 about good vs bad design, so I'm happy to let you folks debate this.

 As for my student: this student is fairly new to me (and to Haskell), and
 we have yet to have our first meeting in the spring semester. My guess is
 that she will be able to work well with a rather-concrete specification --
 but it seems we are moving in that direction (modulo challenges with
 #10735).
