 I think rwbarton is probably right; looking at the commit that fixed this
 for instances 4c834fdddf4d44d12039da4d6a2c63a660975b95 it doesn't look
 like I actually added any code for *family instances*. So we need to apply
 an analogous fix there. (I'm not sure what hptInstances is doing but I
 think it is something else?)
