Apoligies, I can see why you'd be misled by comment:2. What I meant in
comment:2 is "under the design proposed in #14288, `kk` would be brought
into scope". But I later realized there was a simpler way forward that
didn't require implementing all of #14288, so you can ignore anything I
said before that :)
