 Thank you so much, cipher1024! That was tremendously helpful.

 I've attached a version with no dependencies. Sadly, it gives the same
 panic on GHC 8.2.1 and HEAD. However, it does //not// panic on GHC
 7.10.3–I'll see which commit caused this.
