 I can't remember if this had been filed before but this is present in both
 7.8.4 and 8.0.1:

 {{{
 Prelude> newtype A = (****) Int
 }}}

 There is no way to use the constructor `****`:

 {{{
 Prelude> :i A
 newtype A = **** Int    -- Defined at <interactive>:3:1
 Prelude> :i ****

 Top level: Not in scope: ‘****’
 Prelude> :t (****)

 <interactive>:1:1: Not in scope: ‘****’
 Prelude>
