 There's a proposal for a partial fix in
 https://github.com/haskell/cabal/pull/3982 (and backported to Cabal 1.24
 in https://github.com/haskell/cabal/pull/3983).

 "Partial" fix in that the problem persists unaddressed for `cabal new-
 buld`, which will still trigger the "malformed mach-o: load commands size"
 failure.

 I have used the PR to build git-annex in a cabal sandbox successfully
 (hurray). Attempting to do the same with cabal new-build still fails as
 "expected."
