Comment (by goldfire):

 Grumble. Option (3) gives me no way to see what the next type parameter
 should be if I've already written a handful. I suppose we could introduce
 a new GHCi command that doesn't instantiate.

 I do agree that choosing (3) will be less surprising to more users than my
 option (1).
